What is Individual Counseling?
At Portner Counseling Group, the counselor and individual work together as a team to reach a common ground and resolution for their substance abuse. Patients and counselors work one-on-one in a private, safe, and supportive environment to identify and explore the issues contributing to substance use and the resulting consequences. Our trained therapists will explore the patient’s feelings, beliefs, and behavior surrounding the issues that are alienating them from loved ones.
Why Choose Individual Counseling?
The benefit of individual counseling is that it provides a private setting to deal with issues that individuals may not feel comfortable sharing with a counselor in front of a group of people. Unlike with group therapy, individual counseling allows for more time and attention spent on individuals who have very distinct or pressing needs that may not be easily resolved. Individual counseling also allows for the counselor to focus on helping the patient work through challenging or influential memories, identify aspects of their lives that they would like to improve, better understand themselves and others, set personal goals, and work toward a desired change.
The number of counseling sessions will depend on the severity of the individual’s problem and its source. The issues could stem as a result from any number of emotional ailments including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, harassment, grief, trauma, low or poor self-esteem, guilt, interpersonal problems, stress reactions, and problems associated with living in general. Individuals often struggle with an internal conflict of some sort and are in great emotional pain. They may be aware of the fact that they are stressed and feeling depressed, but may be unable to identify why exactly that might be.
Individuals seeking help from Portner Counseling Group often possess a feeling of helplessness about their situation and are vulnerable, afraid, or perhaps angry. They manifest these feelings into negative actions and hurt themselves and/or others because they don’t know how to identify and treat what is ailing them. Although individuals typically attribute their pain to external factors as a result of what’s occurring around them today, what they fail to realize is that the true source of their pain began from repressed memories and traumatic childhood experiences. Those very defenses that enable a child to cope with emotional pain may ultimately become a problem in their adult life. Unchecked emotional childhood wounds may restrict an individual’s pursuit of goals and develop close relationships.
Individual Counseling with Portner Counseling Group can help give you hope, help you come to terms with your vulnerabilities and relating circumstances, and help you create a plan for tackling your emotions and feelings. Our expert counselors can help you get on the path toward meeting your goals and building relationships again.
